Audio slide show: The Ballad of Mateo
The first song Matthew Stoneman wrote in Spanish was in prison, with chains around his waist and ankles. But that first song was the beginning of the new Stoneman, otherwise known as “Mateo,” the singer who would become an intimate witness to Latino life in Los Angeles through song. For eight years, Stoneman, from New Hampshire, has been spotted singing in Mexican restaurants.
