Man accused of liposuction without medical license

A San Francisco man with no medical license performed liposuction on a woman while smoking a cigar, then flushed 6 pounds of fat he removed down her toilet, a newspaper reported Friday.

Carlos Guzmangarza, 49, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of posing as a physician assistant to perform cosmetic surgery on the woman and treat her daughter for acne, said Stephanie Ong Stillman, a spokeswoman for the San Francisco district attorney’s office.

Guzmangarza is accused of operating a bogus clinic on Mission Street called the Derma Clinic, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The victim, a Daly City woman, contacted Guzmangarza last year seeking liposuction and was offered the rock-bottom rate of $3,000. Guzmangarza allegedly drove the woman to his office the day of the surgery.

During the procedure, he smoked a cigar and had the woman hold the IV bag, Stillman said. She was conscious under local anesthesia.

A few days later, the doctor showed up at her home with 6 pounds of her fat, Stillman said. Saying that he needed a place to dispose of the material, he allegedly flushed it down the toilet.

It wasn’t until the liposuction patient’s abdomen became infected and she saw a real doctor that she realized Guzmangarza was a fraud, Stillman said. The woman has since had corrective surgery.

Guzmangarza was being held on $750,000 bail on charges of practicing medicine without a license, assault with force most likely to cause great bodily harm, battery causing serious bodily harm, false impersonation, identity theft and grand theft.

He faces up to 12 years in state prison.
