Earthquake: 3.1 quake strikes near Cottonwood, Calif.

A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported Thursday afternoon four miles from Cottonwood, Calif., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 3:49 p.m. Pacific time at a depth of 6.8 miles.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was six miles from Woodland, Calif., nine miles from Davis, Calif., 12 miles from Dixon, Calif., and 21 miles from Sacramento.

In the last 10 days, there have been two earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.
