Police have arrested a man in connection with the fatal shooting Tuesday in Long Beach.

Eric Jerome Williams Jr., 29, of Long Beach was booked on suspicion of murder and is being held at Long Beach City Jail on $1-million bail, police said.

A female victim was found in an alley with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers believe a man shot the woman and fled with a toddler before police arrived. An officer saw someone matching the gunman’s description at an apartment building in the 1800 block of Chestnut Avenue.

Officers, concerned for the child’s safety, forced entry into the apartment and rescued him, police said. He appeared to be unharmed and is now in the care of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services.

The investigation is ongoing.
