Broad Foundation gives scholarships to 8 Corona-Norco seniors
Eight seniors from the Corona-Norco Unified School District were surprised Wednesday with $160,000 worth of college scholarships from the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation.
The Riverside County district is a finalist for the prestigious Broad Prize, which honors academic excellence by minority and low-income students in urban districts across the nation.
The students -- from Santiago, Centennial, John F Kennedy and Eleanor Roosevelt high schools -- are enrolled in four-year institutions and will each receive $20,000 paid out over four years.
“We commend these students for working hard to improve their grades during high school,” said Gregory McGinity, managing director of policy for the Broad Foundation, a national education philanthropy based in Los Angeles.
“Just as Corona-Norco has been recognized nationally for boosting student achievement,” McGinity said, “these students have demonstrated that hard work pays off.”
The district did not apply for the award; it was chosen as a finalist after undergoing a thorough assessment that includes data analysis, interviews and comprehensive school site visits.
The assessment will ultimately determine if Corona-Norco will be awarded the Prize’s $550,000 top honor on Sept. 25 in Washington, D.C.
This is the second consecutive year that Corona-Norco has been named a finalist for the prize.
