Cal State accepting applications for fall 2014 term

California State University campuses are accepting applications for the fall 2014 term, officials said.

Enrollment is expected to increase by about 6,000 students, helped by an infusion of funding from Proposition 30, Gov. Jerry Brown’s voter-approved measure that temporarily raises certain taxes for education and other purposes.

Even with the new funding, however, the system is expected to turn away some 20,000 eligible students because of drastic funding cuts made in previous years.

The Board of Trustees last week discussed a preliminary budget for 2014-15 that seeks an additional $250 million from the state, funding that could help to add another 20,000 students. A final budget request is expected to be approved at the board’s November meeting.

“Our ongoing challenge is meeting the ever-increasing demand from students who hope to earn those degrees,” said Ephraim P. Smith, Cal State executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer. “If California is to meet the future needs for the highly educated workforce that our state’s key industries demand, funding to allow for increasing enrollment is critical.”

More than 430,000 students attend Cal State’s 23 campuses, which make up the largest system of higher education in the nation.

High school seniors, community college transfers and others should apply no later than Nov. 30, as most Cal State campuses will stop accepting applications after that date. The online application can be completed at www.csumentor.edu.

Applicants can also view a new degree database that lists all undergraduate and graduate programs offered at campuses.
