‘Century Crunch’ starts biting tonight with 3-mile detour to LAX
Motorists are being advised to avoid a main thoroughfare into Los Angeles International Airport this weekend as construction begins on a new light rail station.
The intersection of Century and Aviation boulevards will be closed starting Friday night as part of “Century Crunch,” an approximately 57-hour shutdown that will allow crews to demolish an old railroad bridge and begin construction of a new Metro station.
The closure is expected to last from 9 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday.
Construction on the station, which will connect travelers to LAX, will continue on Century Boulevard for the next 16 months.
Access to the Sepulveda Boulevard entrance to the airport will remain open, but officials have recommended travelers take public transportation and allot extra time for potential traffic congestion.
The intersection of Century and Aviation boulevards is a main artery to LAX that 92,000 motorists pass through every day.
Traffic will be rerouted three miles around the intersection, with vehicles heading toward LAX sent north on La Cienega Boulevard, west onto Manchester Boulevard and then south on Airport Boulevard to rejoin Century.
