L.A. Now Live Chat about David Chan’s 6,297 Chinese restaurants
Times reporter Frank Shyong and attorney David Chan will join L.A. Now Live at 9 a.m. Tuesday to discuss Chan’s culinary journey to 6,297 Chinese restaurants.
Chan, a third-generation Chinese American, has been keeping track of every Chinese restaurant he’s dined at since the early 1980s. He grew up with little to no knowledge of his culture, and eating Chinese food became a way of discovering it.
Chan’s appetite helped him discover unique slices of Chinese American immigrant life all over the nation. He’s eaten green onion pancakes in Alaska, sampled a buffet in Nashville and consumed several regional varieties of Chinese food -- including chow mein sandwiches in New England, an egg foo yong burger in St. Paul, Minn., and a kind of cashew chicken that can be found only in Springfield, Mo.

In Chan’s dining patterns, you can find a very rough approximation of Chinese food trends in Los Angeles -- beginning in Chinatown, spreading throughout the city and eventually concentrating in the San Gabriel Valley.
