Three men in their 20s died Thursday night in a head-on traffic collision in San Juan Capistrano, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said.

The collision occurred about 8 p.m. on Camino Capistrano between Avery Parkway and Junipero Serra Road, a miles-long stretch of road parallel to the 5 Freeway.

Investigators have not determined why a Ford Focus northbound on the road crossed over the double-yellow lines and smashed into a Honda Accord.

Sergio Lugo, 23, the driver of the Ford Focus, and his passenger, Juan Gutierrez, 26, were killed, as was the driver of the Honda Accord, Guillermo Belman-Sanchez, 22.

Two passengers in the Honda, a man and woman in their 20s, were taken to a local hospital, where they were in critical condition.

Toxicology tests are pending for everyone involved in the crash, but there was no evidence at the scene to indicate drugs or alcohol were involved, said sheriff’s department spokesman Lt. Jeff Hallock.
