Flames, black smoke seen in Long Beach area is refinery burnoff

A black plume of smoke and tall flame visible around Long Beach and San Pedro is a controlled burnoff by the Valero refinery in Wilmington, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Burnoffs are common at refineries, though this one was seen over a large area.

“No emergency. LAFD not needed,” the fire department said in Twitter.
