A 27-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly hitting and killing an elderly man with her car and fleeing the scene in Sunset Beach on Sunday night.

Laura Ferreira, 27, was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run causing death or injury, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence and causing great bodily injury, Huntington Beach police arrest records show.

About 9:45 p.m. Sunday, Ferreira was heading south on Pacific Coast Highway when she hit a 72-year-old man as he was getting into his car, which was parked on the street in front of a post office, according to police. The man was rushed to a local hospital, where he died. His identity is not being released pending notification of next of kin.

A witness who saw Ferreira’s car told officers it was parked about a mile down the road from the crash. Evidence on her car tied her to the incident, police said.

Ferreira, a Huntington Beach resident, is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. If she does not post bail, she will likely appear in court Tuesday, police said.
