Sheriffs responded to a call of an injured skier or snowboarder at Heavenly at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday.

The ski patrol found Colvard unconscious in the snow in the upper Nevada Woods, an expert skiing area that was closed at the time, according to a statement from the resort. Authorities said the teen was wearing a helmet when he was injured.

Emergency medical care was administered at the scene by the ski patrol. Colvard was transported down the hill and treated by Tahoe Douglas paramedics. Colvard died from his injuries shortly after.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident.
