Lightning warning issued for San Diego County beaches

Reporting from San Diego — The National Weather Service on Wednesday warned people to stay away from San Diego County beaches because of possible lightning strikes.
A potential exists for cloud to ground -- or cloud to water -- lightning that could prove fatal, forecasters warned. People should seek shelter and avoid metal objects until the thunderstorm passes, they added.
The city of Encinitas announced that all beach events would be canceled.
A fast-moving thunderstorm struck northern San Diego County at approximately 6:30 a.m., followed by rain. The storm is headed south.
In July, a 20-year-old man was killed and several people were injured when lightning struck Venice Beach in Los Angeles during a freak thunderstorm.
