Surfer attacked by shark off California coast near Humboldt Bay

A man who was bitten by a shark while surfing off the Northern California coast over the weekend is expected to survive.

Samoa Peninsula Fire District Chief Dale Unea said the man was bitten on the upper left thigh Sunday morning near Humboldt Bay close to Eureka, KTVU-TV reported.

The man, whose identity was not released, paddled to shore and met rescue crews about 8:45 a.m. He was aided by other surfers, who wrapped his wound and kept him warm.

The injury was minor, authorities said, and the man is expected to survive.

Another surfer also survived a shark attack in the same area last year, according to KTVU.
