A man driving in South Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon was shot and killed, leading to a chain of events that set on fire his car, two parked vehicles and a home.

More than 30 firefighters responded to the shooting near East 50th and South San Pedro streets in the South Park neighborhood shortly before 3 p.m. , said Erik Scott, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Two Los Angeles police officers had already pulled the shooting victim from the vehicle, Scott said.

“Needless to say, firefighters were met by multiple challenges on this single incident,” he said.

The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. Two police officers were taken to a hospital to be treated for minor smoke inhalation, Scott said. It was unclear how much damage was done to the house.

The shooting victim, who police believe was in his late 30s, was driving west on East 50th Street when a person shot him, said Det. Richard Arciniega of the Los Angeles Police Department. Arciniega said it is unclear if the gunman was on foot or in a car. Investigators are looking for witnesses.
