Coroner’s officials say a 51-year-old Los Angeles man died of a gunshot wound to the chest after he was allegedly shot by a driver who demanded $500 for damage caused during a car crash Saturday evening.

Sheriff’s officials said the man, Darrell Orlando Daniels, had tried to exchange information with another driver involved in a crash at Main Street and El Segundo Boulevard before he was gunned down.

The driver refused to exchange information and instead demanded Daniels pay $500 for the damage to his vehicle, according to Deputy Amber Smith of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

During the exchange, Daniels spotted a firearm, so he got into his car and drove toward his home, authorities said.

The driver allegedly followed Daniels to his home in the 200 block of East 121st Street and again demanded he pay for the damage. Daniels again refused, and the driver left.

But an hour later, the driver returned to Daniels’ home, walked up to him and fired multiple shots at him, Smith said in a statement.

Daniels was pronounced dead at the scene.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call the Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
