Four sheriff’s deputies in one car injured in early morning wreck
Four Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were injured Friday morning when the patrol car they were in went out of control and crashed into a telephone pole in Pico Rivera.
The four were rushing to help a deputy who was fighting with a suspect in the 9500 block of Underwood Street, said Sgt. Steve Dodson. Typically, sheriff’s deputies don’t ride four to a car but Dodson speculated some were off duty or on a shift change and jumped into “the first available vehicle.”
With its lights flashing and and siren blaring, the squad car raced north into the 5700 block of Passons Boulevard and crashed north of Mines Avenue after it swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle, Dodson said.
Two deputies in the rear of the vehicle - a male and female - suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospitals where they are listed in stable condition. The female deputy suffered a leg injury and the male an arm injury.
The two deputies in the front suffered some cuts and had complaints of pain. Both were released from the hospital Friday morning.
The deputy they were racing to help came out of the fight uninjured. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft, drug possession, battery on an officer and an outstanding warrant, Dodson said.
