Happy #NationalPuppyDay, enjoy this video of a firefighter rescuing a dog

As if anyone really needed an excuse to celebrate puppies, it turns out there’s a day for just that — National Puppy Day.

Civilians aren’t the only ones partaking; law enforcement agencies are using their Twitter and Facebook feeds to give thanks to their K-9 units as well.

Some are using the day to encourage pet adoption. The Yuma County Sheriff’s Department announced on Facebook that it is partnering with a local humane society to teach inmates handler skills.

And then there are the puppies they save.

On Monday, Santa Monica firefighters performed CPR on a puppy after pulling him from an apartment fire. The fire department shared photos earlier this week, but we think they’re worth sharing on National Puppy Day too.

The dog was “overcome by heat and smoke” and “quickly pulled from the structure not breathing and without a pulse,” according to the agency’s Facebook page. Firefighters used a pet oxygen mask and CPR to revive him.

Photographer Billy Fernando was driving through Santa Monica when he saw smoke and fire trucks, and decided to check out the scene.

He saw a fireman running out of the building holding something in his hand. Fernando soon realized it was a dog, but “the dog wasn’t moving at all,” he said.

“I’ve never seen somebody go that far to just save the life of a pet,” Fernando said. “So I figured this is such a great moment and I have to capture this.”
