A woman was assaulted in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district Tuesday evening by three men who threw a bag over her head and viciously beat her, police said.

Officer Grace Gatpandan of the San Francisco Police Department said the 47-year-old victim was walking near Larkin Street and Golden Gate Avenue around 6:30 p.m. when she was suddenly hit on the head by a hard object.

“It is unconfirmed what type of weapon was used, if a weapon was used,” Gatpandan said.

Three men covered the woman’s head with a cloth bag and proceeded to hit her repeatedly. The attackers fled on foot in an unknown direction.

“It is still an open and active investigation,” said Gatpandan. In addition to talking to the victim, police are looking for witnesses and searching for available surveillance footage.

The motive for the attack is unknown at this time. The attackers did not appear to know the victim, and they did not steal any of her belongings.

The woman was able to get herself to a hospital, where she called the police. Her injuries included bruising on her face and lacerations on her hands, Gatpandan said.

Anyone with information about the attack is encouraged to call the San Francisco Police Department’s anonymous tip line at 415-575-4444.
