Pomona violence continues with car-to-car shooting, no arrests

Pomona police are looking for two men after a dramatic car-to-car shooting and chase Thursday night left one driver wounded and a second motorist injured.

The incident began after 9:30 p.m. in the 400 block of East Harrison Avenue, authorities say, when they received a call about gunshots. With officers already in route, police got another call about a shooting nearly two miles away.

According to police, a vehicle blocked eastbound traffic on Harrison Avenue. When a car drove by, at least one person inside the vehicle blocking traffic opened fire on the passing car.

The passing car fled, its driver wounded with a non-life-threatening injury, Pomona police said in a statement. The vehicle with the shooter gave chase, authorities said. As the two cars drove through Pomona streets, the gunman continued to shoot at the first vehicle.

The chase ended at La Verne and Towne avenues when the fleeing car ran a red light and smashed into another car in the intersection, police said. A person in the car hit in the crash suffered minor injuries and was released. The occupants of the car being chased bailed out of the vehicle and ran to escape the shooter.

Pomona police believe there were at least two occupants in the pursuing car, which fled before police arrived. A specific physical description of the shooters and their vehicle was not immediately available.

After years of declines, Pomona is seeing a significant spike in violence in 2013, police officials said.
