Steve Jobs’ boyhood home gets historical designation
Steve Jobs’ childhood home — where the first Apple computers were created — has been added to the list of historic properties in Los Altos.
The Los Altos Historical Commission voted unanimously Monday night to designate the home at 2066 Crist Drive a “historic resource” because of its association with Jobs, the San Jose Mercury News reported.
The vote comes after a two-year effort by the commission to preserve the one-story, ranch-style home.
The designation will add another layer of review if renovations to the home are ever sought.
The commission did not need the permission of Patricia Jobs, Steve Jobs’ sister and the current owner of the property. But she could appeal the decision to the City Council, the Mercury News reported.
Jobs and Steve Wozniak created the first Apple-branded computer, the Apple 1, in the house’s garage.
In documents supporting the designation, the home is described as the birthplace of Apple computers, where the first 50 Apple 1 machines were assembled.
“The subject property is associated with the development of the first Apple computers in Silicon Valley,” reads one of the supporting documents.
Jobs died in 2011 at age 56.
