A routine traffic stop escalated into a brief car chase and ended with a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy shooting and wounding one man as two others escaped Friday night, authorities said.
Deputies patrolling the unincorporated Westmont area in southwest L.A. County tried to pull a car over about 9:30 p.m.
But the driver refused to stop and led deputies on a chase. After crashing the car, the chase continued on foot, Deputy Guillermina Saldana said in a statement.
A person in the front passenger seat allegedly pointed a handgun at deputies, prompting them to fire and hit the suspect.
The man was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the statement. A handgun was recovered at the scene, Saldana said.
The other two suspects fled the scene and are still at large. Under department policy, the deputy-involved shooting will be investigated by the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office and the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review.
