Two people were killed in separate freeway collisions early Friday, snarling traffic throughout the Los Angeles region.
The fatal crash occurred about 3:15 a.m. near Imperial Highway on the northbound 710 Freeway, temporarily closing all lanes.
A driver reportedly was struck and killed after experiencing car trouble and exiting his vehicle, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Preciado told KTLA.
The 57-year-old Bell Gardens man had been standing outside his Ford Explorer and was waving his hands and a baseball cap in an effort to draw the attention of approaching vehicles, according to a CHP statement.
The driver of the vehicle that struck him, identified only as 38-year-old Los Angeles man, was arrested, according to the CHP.
Soon after, police responded to a separate fatal crash on the westbound 105 Freeway, where a 21-year-old Simi Valley man lost control of his motorcycle and crashed about 3:30 a.m., according to the CHP. The man, who was not immediately identified, was traveling at a high rate of speed when he crashed just east of Central Avenue.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
SigAlerts for both crashes had been lifted by 7:40 a.m.
