A man who was shot and killed by police at Universal CityWalk early Monday was carrying a gun and had fired into the crowd, police said.

No officers were injured in the 1:15 a.m. shooting outside Infusion Lounge as police responded to a disturbance call, said Los Angeles police Officer Drake Madison.

The club was hosting a DJ contest at the time of the shooting. One of the DJs in the contest told CBS Los Angeles that during the event, a fight broke out and then he heard gunfire.

“I was DJing and a lot of guys were rumbling and fighting and of course, you know, they start throwing bottles and this escalated and gunshots rang out,” DJ Phil told CBS Los Angeles.

Officers shot a man who emerged from the fracas with a gun, police said. It was not immediately clear if he fired at police or aimed his gun at them. The man’s weapon was recovered at the scene, Madison said.

Two other people were taken to hospitals but their conditions were not immediately available.

At least two shots were fired, according to cellphone video images obtained by KTLA.

The person who shot the video described the chaotic scene during a battle of disc jockeys at the club.

“It got out of hand, and then you see everyone fighting. ... I don’t know, that’s crazy,” the witness, who declined to be identified, told KTLA. “I don’t know how this could happen at CityWalk, a place where family ... I mean, come on.”
