Prison riot in Kern County leaves one inmate dead, two injured
One inmate was killed and two others injured Monday in a prison riot in the Central Valley.
The riot erupted about 9:20 a.m. in one of Wasco State Prison’s exercise yards, with 40 inmates ultimately being drawn into the fight, state corrections officials said. A correctional officer fired a single shot from his rifle to quell the violence.
All inmates involved were of the same ethnicity, the Associated Press reported.
Three inmates were rushed to outside hospitals, where one was pronounced dead about 10 a.m. His identity has not been released.
No prison employees were hurt during the riot.
Wasco State Prison is one of two reception centers in Kern County where inmates are screened and assessed for their security level.
The 634-acre facility houses 5,000 inmates and employs 1,700 people, according to the prison’s website.
