Father shoots son armed with knife in Whittier confrontation

Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said they will not arrest a father who they say was acting in self-defense when he shot his son during a confrontation inside the family’s home Wednesday night.

The incident began about 10:40 p.m. inside the home in the 9600 block of Du Page Avenue in Whittier. Authorities say 26-year-old Stephen Turner Jr. was armed with a knife when he began arguing with his girlfriend and threatened to kill her.

Turner’s father, who was not identified, was also inside the home and grabbed his gun just in case, officials said. When Turner’s father tried to stop the pair from arguing, authorities say Turner lunged at his dad with the knife and was shot.

Turner was shot in the torso and is listed in stable condition in a local hospital. Once he’s released he will be arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, officials said.

The father’s gun was registered and he had no restrictions on carrying it, therefore his actions were legal and in self defense, officials said. Both he and Turner’s girlfriend were uninjured.
