Nevada car crash survivor lost leg; mother critically injured
A teenage boy who was riding in a van rear-ended by an alleged drunk driver in the Nevada desert lost his leg in the accident, relatives of the passengers said.
The 15-year-old boy, identified only as Eddie, was in a Chevy Astro van with his mother, sister and four other people about 3 a.m. Saturday when it was rear-ended by a Dodge Durango on Interstate 15 north of Las Vegas.
The boy’s mother, Maria Cardenas, was driving and was critically injured. The boy’s sister, 13-year-old Angela Sandoval, was killed. The four other passengers, Genaro, Leonardo and Raudel Fernandez and Raudel’s wife, Belen, also were killed.
The group was returning from Denver, where they had said their last goodbyes to the Fernandez brothers’ ailing father.
The other driver was identified as Jean Ervin Soriano, 18. He is being held on $3.5-million bail, said officials at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas.
Once he was released from the hospital, Soriano arrested on seven counts of suspicion of driving drunk, and killing five people and seriously injuring two others. He was also cited for driving without a license.
Clark County prosecutors likely won’t charge him until his arraignment April 10. Prosecutors are awaiting the results from blood drawn from Soriano after the crash. Nevada Highway Patrol deputies said there were beer bottles inside the Durango at the time of the accident.
