L.A. Mayor’s Election: Speakers predict a win for Wendy Greuel

Backers of Wendy Greuel’s mayoral bid told supporters gathered at her election party Tuesday night that the early results showing Greuel with a slim lead were the first step to a mayoral victory.

“We are going to win this campaign,” former Assembly Speaker Bob Hertzberg told more than 150 supporters gathered at Exchange LA, a downtown nightclub. “So you’ve seen some of the absentee result and what does it say? We’re winning the campaign. It’s the beginning, it’s one step.”

Civil rights icon Dolores Heurta led the crowd in chants of “Viva Wendy!” after she touted Greuel’s ability to bring competing interests together and said the city controller shared the concerns of workers.

“It’s also about bringing the business people together with the working people,” she said. “We need somebody who can bring all of us together.”

Assemblywoman Holly Mitchell pointed to Greuel’s balancing of her political life with being a mother of 9-year-old Thomas, a fixture on the campaign trail.

“I too am a mother in public office, and that’s not easy, and Wendy has done it with grace, with a sense of inclusivity, where we see her family with her, we see the commitment of her partner and her baby,” Mitchell said, adding that this shaped how Greuel approaches policy and her understanding of raising a family in Los Angeles.

“I am proud to stand here as a woman, a mother, a California girl and Angeleno, and a supporter of Wendy Greuel,” she said.
