Earthquake: 2.9 quake strikes near Avalon

A shallow magnitude 2.9 earthquake was reported Saturday morning 11 miles from Avalon, Calif., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 4:45 a.m. Pacific time at a depth of 3.7 miles.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was 14 miles from San Pedro, 15 miles from Rancho Palos Verdes, 17 miles from Long Beach and 359 miles from Phoenix.

In the past 10 days, there have been two earthquakes magnitude 3.0 and greater centered nearby.
