Three people were wounded when gunfire erupted at a Denver marijuana rally Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 5 p.m. at Civic Center Park during a celebration of the so-called 4/20 holiday, the first anniversary of Colorado’s legalization of marijuana for recreational use.

A man was shot in the ankle and the leg, and a woman was shot in the ankle, Denver Police Department spokeswoman Raquel Lopez said.

Both were hospitalized in serious condition, but their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

A third victim emerged two hours later, when a juvenile who was grazed by a bullet checked himself into a local hospital, Lopez said.

Police were looking for two suspects in connection with the shooting. The motive was under investigation, the Denver Post reported.

Laura Forduno, who attended the rally, told the Post that people scrambled to leave the park after the shots went off.

“It was peaceful. Everybody was having fun and then you heard the shots — pow-pow-pow-pow — and everybody started to run,” Forduno said.
