See tweets and photos of the Daytona crash that left fans injured
“Engine thru fence, plenty hurt. This is insane.”
The chilling message was among the tweets quickly sent by fans at the NASCAR Nationwide Series race in Daytona Beach, Fla., where a wild crash Saturday sent debris flying into the stands, injuring at least 28 people. Tweets and images below.
The Los Angeles Times’ Jim Peltz is reporting on the scene in Daytona Beach. Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood said 14 fans were treated at the scene and 14 were taken to local hospitals, the Associated Press reported.
Fans and journalists caught photos of the engine of the car driven by Californian Kyle Larson in the spectator area, as well as a tire that landed several rows up into the grandstand.
Others tweeted photos of the ruined cars after the race and of a line of ambulances at the raceway.
NASCAR issued copyright claims to remove fan video of the debris flying into the stands posted to YouTube, rankling many social media users and bringing some accusations of censorship.
In a responding statement issued to media, NASCAR the video “was blocked on YouTube out of respect for those injured in today’s accident. Information on the status of those fans was unclear and the decision was made to err on the side of caution with this very serious incident.”
