A student shot a school official at a downtown St. Louis adult school and both were rushed to a local hospital Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

According to police, the gunman entered a building at the Stevens Institute of Business and Arts around 2 p.m. and confronted the school official, a man in his 40s. The gunman fired then turned the gun on himself.

Police responded and both men were taken by ambulance to Saint Louis University Hospital, spokeswoman Laura Keller told the Los Angeles Times by telephone.

Police said they had since secured the scene.

Students were huddled under desks and in closets, and the school official had made it to an elevator, the Associated Press reported.

The school offers classes in fashion and retail, interior design, business administration and paralegal studies.
