Two military bombs removed from Glassell Park home

The Los Angeles Police Department’s bomb squad on Saturday removed two live Korean War or Vietnam War-era bombs from a house in the Glassell Park neighborhood.
A man cleaning the garage of his parent’s home in the 4000 block of Verdugo Road called police about 10:15 a.m. when he found two American bombs or rocket projectiles, said Sgt. Wayne Guillary of LAPD’s Northeast Station.
The LAPD’s bomb squad was sent to the home. Dozens of residents were evacuated within a 300-yard radius until the squad removed the bombs from the garage about 5 p.m., Guillary said.
The Verdugo off-ramp of the 2 Freeway was closed temporarily by the California Highway Patrol, Guillary added. Officials with the city’s Department of Transportation were at the scene rerouting traffic, and the Los Angeles Fire Department was standing by as a precaution.
It took several hours for authorities to remove the bombs, Guillary said, adding that the bombs will be either destroyed or handed over to the military.
