Joel Pett is the Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist of the Lexington Herald-Leader. His work also appears in USA Today.

Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr. is all fresh-faced smiles, but worry lines are being drawn by partisans and political artisans.

Though President Bush spurned the two Edith candidates — disappointing his first lady and the first-ever lady Supreme he seeks to replace — he didn’t tap any Archie Bunker.

And because Roberts is no vocal right-wing grouch potato, it remains for the firm of Leahy, Kennedy & Boxer to hold hearings and hear his holdings on women’s rights, affirmative action and original intent. While Senate Democrats try to draw him out, cartoonists will put pens to litmus paper and figure out how to draw him outraged, or draw him outstanding.
