Re “Valley landfill oversight dispute comes to a head,” June 30
The Times’ article states correctly that Browning-Ferris Industries is again trying to make an end run around the city and the county, using tactics it has employed for years.
BFI claims that it is running out of capacity while the city and county are taking too long forming a joint powers authority. However, the company is only running short of capacity because it piled dirt into an area “reserved” for trash. It had a permit to do so -- temporarily.
This situation underscores the need to end our dependency on landfills and companies like BFI, which are motivated strictly by financial greed. I find it ironic that I am responding to this article while traveling to evaluate technologies for converting waste to energy.
