Re “Breaking the family embargo,” Opinion, Feb. 3

Parents should not load on their children the baggage of their past suffering when it comes to something as important as their cultural identity and heritage. The “family embargo” that Vanessa Garcia describes only adds more grief to the U.S.-born offspring of Cuban parents, beyond the suffering that America’s unjust embargo on Cuba has already caused.

After Garcia visits Cuba, she might agree with her parents’ vehemently anti-Castro views — or maybe not — but the choice to visit should be hers alone to make.
