Re “Ailing Postal Service may yet fail to deliver,” May 28
If the Department of Defense is the only other federal agency that pre-funds future retiree health benefits, it seems only right that the U.S. Postal Service should receive funding from taxpayers the same way as the Defense Department does: as a fixed allocation, not a loan from the Treasury, as the Postal Service’s current status as a government corporation requires.
The Postal Service fulfills a vital need, and it should be funded fairly.

As evidenced by the financial burdens and restrictions placed on the Postal Service, it appears that Congress is determined to drive this trusted service into insolvency. If this is allowed to happen, mail service will effectively be privatized, which would be disastrous for the American public — but just think of all the money to be made!
I sincerely hope that the few remaining reasonable members of Congress will prevail and not let our Postal Service become a victim of greed and politics.
