Readers React: Edison wants a thriving market for solar energy

To the editor: Your editorial states that a rebalancing of the costs in order to create a fairer system for all customers associated with net energy metering in California is “necessary.” We fully agree. (“Please, PUC, don’t cast a cloud over the solar boom,” editorial, Oct. 30)

We also agree with your analysis of the issues faced by the California Public Utilities Commission — that proposals seeking virtually no change “just aren’t realistic” and that the need for action is critical.

We do, however, disagree with the piece casting Southern California Edison’s proposal as “turning out the lights on solar.”

Your editorial urges the commission to find a middle ground. We believe Edison’s proposal does just that. Our proposal encourages greater solar adoption while reducing the cost burden on non-solar customers. In fact, if our proposal were to be adopted, analysis conducted using tools developed by the commission show that the number of solar customers would at least double.

Solar energy is clearly a big part of California’s future, and our proposal seeks to help create sustainable solar power that is accessible to anyone who wants it.
