Obama plans college-town push during GOP convention
NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Don’t count on President Obama laying low during the Republican National Convention.
As the GOP gathers in Tampa, Fla., the president will barnstorm college towns in a trio of critical states next week, making a play for a key piece of his electoral coalition just as students return for the fall semester.
The campaign announced Wednesday that Obama would visit Ames, Iowa, Fort Collins, Colo., and Charlottesville, Va., on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, the middle days of the four-day GOP convention in Tampa.
Vice President Joe Biden will be making a more conspicuous campaign swing during the RNC, with events in the Tampa area and other Florida locales Monday and Tuesday.
For the moment, it appears that both top Democrats will be down on Aug. 30, the day Mitt Romney will formally accept his party’s nomination.
Obama has been pressing an education-themed message this week. On Tuesday he paid visits to two college campuses in Columbus, Ohio, including one to the Ohio State University student union on the eve of the start of the fall semester.
Wednesday he spoke at a North Las Vegas high school, after a stop the night before at a Reno community college.
