Obama to deliver remarks on Supreme Court healthcare ruling
WASHINGTON – President Obama is will deliver remarks Thursday from the White House on the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic decision to uphold his healthcare law.
The president will deliver a statement at 12:15 EST from the East Room, the White House says.
White House aides have been tight-lipped about how the president planned to react to the court’s ruling, refusing even to confirm that the president would speak on it.
But Obama is no doubt eager to seize the spotlight. An official, who was not authorized to talk about the president’s schedule, confirmed the planned remarks as the news spread through the White House.
The Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, ruling the government may impose tax penalties on persons who do not have health insurance.
The ruling was not a total victory for the Obama administration.
Chief Justice John G. Roberts, who wrote the opinion for a 5-4 majority, said the required expansion of Medicaid violates states’ rights and may be unconstitutional.
