Iowa’s 4th Congressional District might rest in the physical center of the nation, but this election cycle the seat features a particularly interesting battle between opposite wings of the greater American political establishment.

The seat is held by hard-line Republican conservative Rep. Steve King, and from the opposite side comes former Iowa First Lady Christie Vilsack, whose husband took a position in the Obama administration after serving as governor.

The Omaha World-Herald likened the contest to a “proxy war” between the tea party and the Obama administration, as if the race were Vietnam; the battle’s victory will ultimately be decided by a sizable population of independent voters in this traditionally conservative-leaning district.
