Live results: Green candidate may hurt Democrat in N.Y. House race

A close race for New York’s upstate 24th Congressional District seat may pivot on whether the popularity of a Green Party candidate will torpedo Democrats’ hopes to take the seat from Republican incumbent Ann Marie Buerkle.

A pre-election poll showed Democratic challenger Dan Maffei in a dead heat with Buerkle, who has nurtured Green Party contender Ursula Rozum’s 8% share by inviting her to several town hall debates that Maffei skipped – the conventional wisdom being that every vote gained by the Green Party candidate is a vote lost for the Democrats.
