Republicans edge Democrats in 2010 polling

Share

In the generic question of a Republican versus a Democrat, the Republican has gained an edge over the Democrat in the newest Gallup test of party preferences in the coming midterm congressional elections -- the shift measured after Congress passed the historic healthcare legislation that President Barack Obama has signed into law.

Obama is bound for Portland, Me., today to tout the benefits of the healthcare legisatlion -- having signed the second part into law, the “reconciliation’’ bill, just this week. He will head to Boston later to headline fundraisers for the Democratic National Committee at the State House (It’s Massachusetts) and at the Boston Opera House.

“Any Republican advantage among all registered voters in midterm elections has been “rare in Gallup’s 60-year history of tracking congressional voting preferences,’’ Gallup’s Jeffrey Jones writes -- this was the case in the 1950, 1994 and 2002 election cycles, all ending with strong GOP showings.
