Boys’ Golf: Defending OCL champs look to improve

One week after the 2016 season opener was canceled, the Laguna Beach High boys’ golf team finally opened its campaign Tuesday against Dana Hills. In a nonleague match at El Niguel Golf Course in Laguna Niguel, the Breakers lost to the Dolphins, 185-223.

Kyle Sharp shot a low score of 43 for Laguna.

“As a team we are hoping to improve on today’s overall team score as the season moves forward,” said Scott Finn who is in his 13th year as Laguna’s varsity boys’ golf coach.

The Breakers and Dolphins squared off again Thursday in a nonleague match. The score wasn’t available at press time.

The Breakers will compete Monday at the Aliso Niguel Wolverine Classic starting at noon.

Ten golfers return to the Laguna roster from a 2015 team that won the Orange Coast League championship with an undefeated league run, and finished in ninth place at the 18-team CIF Southern Section Southern Division tournament.

Coach’s take: “We had a great season last year with a young team,” Finn said. “We are looking to build on last year to find success this year. We have a lot of experience on this year’s team and I am looking forward to seeing how the boys play this year. They are excited to get the season started and get into competition.”
