HB bounces back

Huntington Beach High and Edison swept their way to victories Tuesday in Sunset League action to stay in the thick of the championship race.

Huntington traveled to face Los Alamitos in a key match and the Oilers handled the Griffins, 25-10, 25-22, 25-14. Middle blocker Davey Kim had 10 kills and three blocks, outside hitter Eric Beatty eight kills, and outside hitter Noah Franklin six kills for the Oilers.

Fourth-ranked Huntington, which surrendered the No. 1 spot this week in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll after it suffered its first loss in 122 matches in an April 5 league setback to Newport Harbor, improved to 3-1 in league and 19-1 overall.

Los Alamitos, which was tied for the No. 9 spot with Edison in the current section rankings, dipped to 1-3 in league and 15-6 overall.

Huntington bounced back from its loss to Newport Harbor by handing Edison its first league loss Friday with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-16 sweep. Outside hitter Sean Morrissey had 10 kills, middle blocker Shane Holdaway nine kills and five blocks, and Beatty nine kills.

Edison came back Tuesday to run its league record to 3-1 by sweeping rival and visiting Fountain Valley, 25-9, 25-10, 25-10. The Chargers improved to 13-8 overall.

In the other Sunset match Tuesday, Newport Harbor, which took over the top spot in the Division 1 rankings, improved to 4-0 in league (first place) with a 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 sweep at Marina (0-4 league).

Ocean View played a Golden West League match Wednesday at Segerstrom. The score wasn’t available at press time.

In Sunset League action at 5:45 p.m. Friday, Edison visits Newport Harbor, Fountain Valley hosts Huntington, and Marina hosts Los Alamitos. In a 4:30 p.m. Golden West League match Friday, Ocean View hosts Loara.

Ocean View defeated Savanna Tuesday, 262-317, at Mile Square Golf Course (par 36) in Fountain Valley to improve to 9-0 in Orange League play. Sophomore Chris Lee of the Seahawks medaled with a round of 49.

In a previous league match at Mile Square Golf Course (par 36), Ocean View defeated Magnolia April 8, 253-327. Lee also took medalist honors with a 47 score.

Ocean View faced Katella (8-1) in a key league match Wednesday. The score wasn’t available at press time.
