Mailbag: Tilly’s mural brings a smile to drivers’ faces

Nooooo, don’t go! Don’t take down the Tilly’s mural by artist Zio Ziegler (“Tilly’s mural spurs debate about art,” Dec. 13).

Freeway driving is not fun — unless you are driving past the Tilly’s building and a glimpse of whimsical, provocative art elicits wonder and ignites your bored mind.

I have cancer and drive past the mural frequently en route to chemotherapy at Kaiser Permanente, off Sand Canyon, and the mural makes me smile and inspires me to endure the cure and to envision a healthy, strong body that can run, play and be active again.

The mural is part of my therapy and my cure. Please do not take it down. Why?

What’s wrong with a little color in Irvine?

I was disappointed to hear that the Irvine Planning Commission may be enforcing this temporary order to remove Zio Ziegler’s mural in Irvine.

I happened to be driving by when Ziegler was painting it, and it piqued my interest. When I drove by it again and saw the finished work, it made me happy.

I’m not sure what the Planning Commission has against happiness or a little color in Irvine. If you ask me, a little color really brightens my day. I’d really like to say thank you to Ziegler for brightening my days on the 405 Freeway.
