Angels fail to capitalize on opportunities in loss to Indians, 4-3
KEY MOMENTS: There were two for the Angels’ offense. Albert Pujols grounded out to third with the bases loaded to end the fourth inning, and Chris Iannetta struck out on a 96-mph Trevor Bauer fastball with runners on second and third to end the fifth. The Angels went one for nine with runners in scoring position.
AT THE PLATE: Iannetta followed singles by David Freese and Howie Kendrick with a two-run double to left-center field in the second, and his fourth-inning single off the wall in left advanced Raul Ibanez to third. John McDonald followed with a sacrifice fly to pull the Angels even, 3-3.
ON THE MOUND: Jered Weaver gave up a two-run homer to Asdrubal Cabrera in the first and a solo shot to Carlos Santana in the fourth. He has allowed eight homers in his last seven starts and 14 this season, second-most in the American League. “It’s no secret I can’t stay away from the home run ball,” Weaver said. “It’s been killing me lately, and that was the difference again tonight.”
HIP CHECK: Shortstop Erick Aybar, who left Sunday night’s game in Atlanta because of a sore left hip, did not start Monday, but he pinch-hit in the eighth, singling to right, and remained in the game on defense. He is expected to return to the lineup Tuesday night.
ALL-STAR UPDATE: Mike Trout appears to be a lock for his second straight All-Star start, ranking second among AL players with 2,544,658 votes. He trails Toronto outfielder Jose Bautista (2,906,878) but is well ahead of Toronto outfielder Melky Cabrera (1,454,528).
EXTRA BASES: Weaver suffered his first career loss in Progressive Field. He entered the game with a 6-0 record and 1.64 earned-run average in nine career starts in Cleveland Tyler Skaggs, on the disabled list because of a right-hamstring strain, will throw a simulated game Tuesday, and the left-hander remains on course to be activated early next week.
UP NEXT: Right-hander Matt Shoemaker (3-1, 4.19 ERA) will oppose Cleveland right-hander Josh Tomlin (4-3, 3.33 ERA) at Progressive Field on Tuesday at 4 p.m. PDT. On the air: TV: FS West. Radio: 830, 1220.
