Fast and explosive, the former University of Maryland wide receiver will be tested against stronger cornerbacks this week versus the Eagles’ tandem of Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Asomugha is a four-time All-Pro who intercepted three passes last season even while mostly being avoided by quarterbacks. Rodgers-Cromartie intercepted two passes against the Cleveland Browns a week ago. Smith is fast enough to get behind most cornerbacks, but this is a more difficult pair of cornerbacks to run past.  (Patrick Smith, Getty Images)

Boldin and Jones are established targets for Joe Flacco and Smith appears to be an emerging star. Williams (No. 15) had a strong training camp and is a key contributor on special teams. Doss, a second-year player, and Thompson, an undrafted rookie, will both edge out sixth-round draft pick Tommy Streeter (No. 11), who is practice-squad material. ()

Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith arrived super-stylish to Preakness 2012. His jacket was a sporty periwinkle blue and his trousers -- pale yellow. He hung out in the Under Armour tent, popping out ever so often for a phone call or pictures with fans. He said he’d be rooting for Kevin Plank’s horse, Tiger Walk. Teammate Haloti Ngata, also at the Under Armour fete, said he wouldn’t be placing any bets because, “I didn’t do too well last time.” (Jill Rosen)

What major college conference has the Ravens mined for talent the most? The ACC. They have drafted 20 players from the ACC, including three in last year’s draft (Torrey Smith, Tyrod Taylor, and Anthony Allen). The SEC is second with 19, followed by the Big 12 with 16 and a tie between the Big Ten and the Pac 10 with 12. The Ravens have only drafted eight players from the Big East (though one was running back Ray Rice). (COLBY WARE, BALTIMORE SUN)

Age: 23

Position: WR

Skinny: Labeled a bust after being held without a catch for the first two games, Smith had the best season ever for a Ravens’ rookie wide receiver. The second-round pick set rookie records in catches, receiving yards and touchdown. He has plenty of developing to do, a scary thought for the opposition. (Karl Merton Ferron, Baltimore Sun)

A second-round pick out of Maryland, the Ravens are hoping that Smith gives them the deep threat they have been lacking. Whether Smith can emerge as a vertical threat will have everything to do with whether the Ravens can build a balanced offense. Safeties who must be wary of long fly or post routes are not as effective against the run and can’t adjust to plays happening underneath, which would create room for possession receivers Anquan Boldin and Tandon Doss as well as the tight ends.  (Evan Habeeb-US PRESSWIRE, US PRESSWIRE)
