He’s an intriguing player, with great speed and the ability to play several positions.

But whatever thoughts the Dodgers had of having Jose Peraza on their postseason roster may have dissipated with yet another hamstring issue.

Peraza, 21, aggravated a nearly two-week-old hamstring injury on Sunday during the Dodgers’ 4-3 victory in Arizona. Manager Don Mattingly said Peraza had an MRI exam Monday, and admitted he could be out for the rest of the year.

“Sounds like it could be,” Mattingly.

Peraza was the highly rated prospect the Dodgers acquired in their deadline trade with the Atlanta Braves. He had just four hits in 22 at-bats (.182), but one was a double and another was a triple. He made good on all three stolen-base attempts.

The Dodgers wanted to identify someone they could use as a pinch-runner in the playoffs, and Peraza appeared to have assumed that role. Two years ago they brought up Dee Gordon for that purpose. Last year Gordon was their starting second baseman.

Now there is no designated speedster on their roster.

“I don’t think we have anyone else that we would consider for that role,” Mattingly said. “Obviously that’s up in the air now.

“That type of thing is a luxury. Sometimes you would need it, sometimes you wouldn’t. We had Dee a couple years ago and I think we used him one time. It’s one of those things, you never know if you’re going to need it or not until you get to that spot.”

Peraza was scheduled to be examined Monday by a team doctor after the MRI results were back. He sat out 10 games after initially tweaking the hamstring on Sept. 1.

In other team injury news:

--Shortstop Jimmy Rollins missed his seventh consecutive start with a bruised knuckle he injured sliding into second base. He had been scheduled to hit and throw Monday.

“That got pushed back another day,” Mattingly said. “I think he felt like he needed one more day.”

The play of rookie shortstop Corey Seager (.412/.524/.647 slash line) has made the loss of Rollins easy for the Dodgers to absorb.

--Second baseman Howie Kendrick (yet another hamstring) played in a simulated game and ran the bases Monday, and may do so again Tuesday.

“I know he’s been feeling good,” Mattingly said. “I’m assuming he’s feeling better than he was the other day so we’re getting closer.”

--Carl Crawford remained out with a sore hamstring. Mattingly said Crawford felt ready to play Monday but the Dodgers did not want to push another hamstring injury. He tweaked his left hamstring Saturday.

“Kind of erring on the side of caution,” Mattingly said. “We’ve obviously had a rash of hamstrings and his getting tight the other day just put us in a cautious mode with him.”

Though Mattingly said Crawford could possibly pinch-hit, he is also not expected to play the next two games when the Rockies are scheduled to start left-handers.
