Bryan Stow’s son throws ceremonial first pitch at Giants opener

Long before Matt Cain did his Nolan Ryan imitation, before things got testy back in a Delaware court room and while the tarp was still on the field at Dodger Stadium, they had a nice moment Friday at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

The 13-year-old son of Bryan Stow, the Giants fan severely beaten after last year’s season opener at Dodger Stadium, threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Giants’ home opener. And it happened with a virtual assist from his father.

Tyler Stow took the mound to throw out the first pitch, surrounded by the entire Giants team. Then those at AT&T were asked to look up at the video board in center field, where a live image was beamed of Bryan sitting in a wheelchair next to his mother, Ann, from his rehab center.

Ann read a short statement before Bryan haltingly said, “Tyler, here’s your ball son. Good luck.”

Bryan, who suffered brain damage in the parking-lot attack, then raised his right arm with a baseball, as if handing it to his son. Back at the ballpark, Tyler then threw the ceremonial first pitch.

Cain then went out and pitched a one-hit shutout for the Giants, striking out 11 in a 5-0 victory over the Pirates.
